During a torrential downpour, a faithful churchgoer hears a knock on his door. He opens it to find a policeman. “The river is flooding and we’re evacuating the area,” the policeman tells him. “Come with me.” The man replies, “Thank you, Officer, but I have faith that God will take care of me.” And he shuts the door. A few hours later, with water lapping at his front steps, he hears another knock. This time it’s a rescue worker in a large truck, who tells him, “The water is rising, but I can get you out of here.” The man again politely declines. “I’m a true believer and I trust that God will take care of me.” A few hours later, with water up to the gutters, the man is crouched on his roof. A fellow in a boat pulls up. “Come on! I’ll help you to higher ground,” the boater calls out. Once more, the man refuses, declaring that his faith in God is all of the help he needs. The next morning, the water has risen so that the man has only the top of his chimney on which to stand. A helicopter pilot spots him. Hovering above, he lowers a rope ladder and calls out, “Grab on! I’ll save you!” The man waves the helicopter on. Shivering and alone, the man says loudly, “My faith in God will keep me safe.” Not surprisingly, the man drowns, and he finds himself at the gates of heaven. He’s ushered into God’s presence, but his faith is shaken and he doesn’t speak. Finally, God addresses him: “What troubles you, my son?” The man replies, “Well, I lived a life of true faith. I attended church regularly. I volunteered at the soup kitchen. I contributed to charities. When faced with troubles, I proclaimed that faith rather than complain. I believed that You would take care of Your faithful. So why did you let me drown?” God is silent for a moment. Finally, He grabs the man by the shoulders and shakes him, yelling, “I sent you a policeman, a truck, a boat and a helicopter! What were you waiting for?! ↗

Would you?” said Gabriel to Will, hotly. “If it was your family?” His lip curled. “Never mind. It’s not as if you know the meaning of loyalty —” “Gabriel.” Gideon’s voice was a reprimand to his brother. “Do not speak to Will in that manner. ↗

William clapped to gain everyone's attention. "All right, listen up. I've got good news and bad news. Because I'm such a positive person, we'll start with the good. Ashlyn survived the birthing, and so did her personal horde." The hallway echoed with breathy sighs of relief...none louder than Maddox's own. "So what's the bad?" someone demanded. After a dramatic pause, the warrior said, "I'm out of conditioner. I need someone to flash out of here and get me some. Hint, I’m looking at you, Lucien. And, yeah, you're welcome for my amazing contrib to your happy family. Little terrors clawed me up but good. ↗

Between 10 and 20 percent of people with anorexia die from heart attacks, other complications and suicide; the disease has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Or Kitty could have lost her life in a different way, lost it to the roller coaster of relapse and recovery, inpatient and outpatient, that eats up, on average, five to seven years. Or a lifetime: only half of all anorexics recovery in the end. The other half endure lives of dysfunction and despair. Friends and families give up on them. Doctors dread treating them. They’re left to stand in the bakery with the voice ringing in their ears, alone in every way that matters. ↗

She had taken him for granted, she thought with surprise and shame, watching the flickering candlelight. She had assumed his kindness was so natural and so innate, she had never asked herself whether it cost him any effort. Any effort to stand between Will and the world, protecting each of them from the other. Any effort to accept the loss of his family with equanimity. Any effort to remain cheerful and calm in the face of his own dying. ↗

James, you are all the family I have. I would die for you. You know that. I would die without you. If it were not for you, I would be dead a hundred times over these past five years. I owe you everything, and if you cannot believe I have empathy, perhaps you might at least believe I know honor--honor, and debt-- ↗

How miserably hypocritical, you might say, but no sooner am I offered a chance to flee Hell than I yearn to stay. Few families hold their relations as closely as do prisons. Few marriages sustain the high level of passion that exists between criminals and those who seek to bring them to justice. It’s no wonder the Zodiac Killer flirted so relentlessly with the police. Or that Jack the Ripper courted and baited detectives with his - or her - coy letters. We all wish to be pursued. We all long to be desired. ↗

I’ve never had anorexia, but I know it well. I see it on the street, in the gaunt and sunken face, the boney chest, the spindly arms of an emaciated woman. I’ve come to recognize the flat look of despair, the hopelessness that follows, inevitably, from years of starvation. I think: That could have been [me]. It wasn’t. It’s not. ↗

One must love God first, and only then can one love one's closest of kin and neighbors. We must not be idols to one another, for such is not the will of God. ↗

I now know for certain that my mind and emotions, my fix on the real and my family's well-being, depend on just a few grams of salt. But treatment's the easy part. Without honesty, without a true family reckoning, that salt's next to worthless. ↗
