For moderns - for us - there is something illicit, it seems, about wasted time, the empty hours of contemplation when a thought unfurls, figures of speech budding and blossoming, articulation drifting like spent petals onto the dark table we all once gathered around to talk and talk, letting time get the better of us. _Just taking our time_, as we say. That is, letting time take us. "Can you say," I once inquired of a sixty-year old cloistered nun who had lived (vibrantly, it seemed) from teh age of nineteen in her monastery cell, "what the core of contemplative life is?" "Leisure," she said, without hesitation, her china blue eyes cheerfully steady on me. I suppose I expected her to say, "Prayer." Or maybe "The search for God." Or "Inner peace." Inner peace would have been good. One of the big-ticket items of spirituality. She saw I didn't see. "It takes time to do this," she said finally. Her "this" being the kind of work that requires abdication from time's industrial purpose (doing things, getting things). By choosing leisure she had bid farewell to the fevered enterprise of getting-and-spending whereby, as the poet said, we lay waste our powers. ↗
The only consolation, even for someone like him who had been a good man in bed, was sexual peace: the slow, merciful extinction of his venereal appetite. At eighty-one years of age he had enough lucidity to realize that he was attached to this world by a few slender threads that could break painlessly with a simple change in position while he slept, and if he did all he could to keep those threads intact, it was because of his terror of not finding God in the darkness of death. ↗
Am I right in suggesting that ordinary life is a mean between these extremes, that the noble man devotes his material wealth to lofty ends, the advancement of science, or art, or some such true ideal; and that the base man does the opposite by concentrating all his abilities on the amassing of wealth?' Exactly; that is the real distinction between the artist and the bourgeois, or, if you prefer it, between the gentleman and the cad. Money, and the things money can buy, have no value, for there is no question of creation, but only of exchange. Houses, lands, gold, jewels, even existing works of art, may be tossed about from one hand to another; they are so, constantly. But neither you nor I can write a sonnet; and what we have, our appreciation of art, we did not buy. We inherited the germ of it, and we developed it by the sweat of our brows. The possession of money helped us, but only by giving us time and opportunity and the means of travel. Anyhow, the principle is clear; one must sacrifice the lower to the higher, and, as the Greeks did with their oxen, one must fatten and bedeck the lower, so that it may be the worthier offering. ↗

Pity the nation that is full of beliefs and empty of religion. Pity the nation that wears a cloth it does not weave and eats a bread it does not harvest. Pity the nation that acclaims the bully as hero, and that deems the glittering conqueror bountiful. Pity a nation that despises a passion in its dream, yet submits in its awakening. Pity the nation that raises not its voice save when it walks in a funeral, boasts not except among its ruins, and will rebel not save when its neck is laid between the sword and the block. Pity the nation whose statesman is a fox, whose philosopher is a juggler, and whose art is the art of patching and mimicking Pity the nation that welcomes its new ruler with trumpeting, and farewells him with hooting, only to welcome another with trumpeting again. Pity the nation whose sages are dumb with years and whose strongmen are yet in the cradle. Pity the nation divided into fragments, each fragment deeming itself a nation. ↗
One night I begged Robin, a scientist by training, to watch Arthur Miller's 'Death of a Salesman' with me on PBS. He lasted about one act, then turned to me in horror: 'This is how you spend your days? Thinking about things like this?' I was ashamed. I could have been learning about string theory or how flowers pollinate themselves. I think his remark was the beginning of my crisis of faith. Like so many of my generation in graduate school, I had turned to literature as a kind of substitute for formal religio, which no longer fed my soul, or for therapy, which I could not afford.... I became interested in exploring the theory of nonfiction and in writing memoir, a genre that gives us access to that lost Middlemarch of reflection and social commentary. ↗
Sometimes we fall into the negative so deeply that we do not realize our first instinctive reaction to everything is to think negatively or to "look" for the bad in every situation. The phrase "too good to be true" directly comes from this aspect of ourselves. To be cautious can be good in certain situations, but to dismiss every interaction or idea to the possibility of "bad things happening" puts us in a place where the beautiful or the divine never gets a chance to fully blossom. Mind your thoughts carefully, as you are the only one who can allow happiness to thrive in your life ↗

The New Dimension is Peaceful, and all work here just as they do on Earth. It’s a place where Learning, Knowledge and Wisdom are essential to that work. It is not Corrupt like the Earth Plane, and there they are free from all of the Corruption that Exists on Earth today. We created this New Dimension for Growing and Learning, as we did Earth. Minds here are advanced, as the Knowledge that was acquired on Earth is now attuned to the Minds of New Dimension Souls. It is a Slow Process for all Souls’ Minds to Learn and absorb Knowledge and Wisdom. LOVE is the answer for all kinds of Souls to advance in the Universe. Through LOVE, Knowledge and Wisdom are well earned. The Earth Plane has gotten off track, forgetting or ignoring this most Important key to Progress. We all here in the Universe is working so hard with Earth Souls to remind them that their purpose on Earth is to advance. First, they must LOVE themselves if they are going to LOVE all of those around them, if they are going to LOVE Other Souls, if they are going to help less fortunate Souls with LOVE and Kindness. All of this is part of Earth Lessons they must learn. Once this is understood, we will attain Peace of Soul and Mind. The Peace that Exists in the Universe is Calmness and it’s like no calmness ever experienced on the Earth Plane. By Learning to be patient with one another, you are giving LOVE, and when you give LOVE to others, you grow and Progress. The Angels on the Second Plane use this Fourth Plane energy to take care of Earth’s Water, Soil and Plant Life, because without this Energy nothing would grow on the Earth Plane. Nothing could exist, and therefore the Earth could not exist, without this energy and the work of the Angels. GOD has Created All of the Earth, and placed each and every Soul there; it seems that Earth today has forgotten this. We mean to bring this to the attention of All Souls so that many Changes will occur on Earth. The Younger Generation will be Very Spiritual, and Open their Earth Minds to Our Ways and needs making Earth a nicer place to Exist on than it is today. Earth will receive Many Warnings denoting what it must do to Change and to create more LOVE between Earth Souls. The Choice is yours while you remain on Earth. Time and the future mean nothing to us. We have no time. We look only at your accounting of Lessons Learned or not Learned, the Progress you are making or not making, and the direction you are going, right or wrong. It does not matter how long it takes to Learn Lessons, if that is many lifetimes or thousands of years; all that counts is Progress of the Soul, and all Souls will Progress, in time. Souls’ Progress is all that counts in the Universe. ↗
If it were up to me..." and then the words pound, desperate and hard, "I'd write this story differently."... "Just that maybe... maybe you don't want to change the story, because you don't know what a different ending holds." The words I choked out that dying, ending day, echo. Pierce. There's a reason I am not writing the story and God is. He knows how it all works out, where it all leads, what it all means. I don't. ↗
Some periods of our growth are so confusing that we don’t even recognize that growth is happening. We may feel hostile or angry or weepy and hysterical, or we may feel depressed. It would never occur to us, unless we stumbled on a book or a person who explained to us, that we were in fact in the process of change, of actually becoming larger, spiritually, than we were before. Whenever we grow, we tend to feel it, as a young seed must feel the weight and inertia of the earth as it seeks to break out of its shell on its way to becoming a plant. Often the feeling is anything but pleasant. But what is most unpleasant is the not knowing what is happening. Those long periods when something inside ourselves seems to be waiting, holding its breath, unsure about what the next step should be, eventually become the periods we wait for, for it is in those periods that we realize that we are being prepared for the next phase of our life and that, in all probability, a new level of the personality is about to be revealed. ↗
