The real problems are cultural. The problems of the people who take drugs as a cultural trap - I think there's a real problem there, the crack stuff, the hopelessness of the junkie. The urban angst.

Jerry Garcia

None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Sometimes I wonder what Hope feeds on? How does it survive even where its chances are minimal or none at all? Is it the positive outlook of ones nature or does it feed off desperation and that need to hold on to something that will keep you going? Is it the truth that fuels it or lies which is easier and more bearable ? How does it hold on and find root, does it camouflage the realities and sugarcoats the pain or pushes you to believe in alternate realities that are nothing but mind play? Why can't we ever give up on Hope? How does it manage to control us so much? That even the harshest realities appear with a silver lining and wrapped in rainbow coloured ribbons? Why despite all odds we still prefer to Hope, when we can accept the reality, change our course and move on? Which facts does Hope base its conclusions on, the past or the present? The good times that were? But if you have to Hope, for similar or better, then probably they don't exist anymore, then why hold on and push away the inevitable? So what does Hope really base its Hope on, the person I was or the person I am yet to become, the dreams I had or the ones I am yet to see, the desires that were fulfilled or the ones that stand in silence waiting for their turn?? I often wonder, how Hope always manages to find its way home!

Merlin Francis

(visions) of strange cities, of sandy plains, of gigantic ruins, of midnight skies with strange bright constellations, of mountain-passes, of grassy nooks flecked with the afternoon sunshine through the boughs: I was in the midst of such scenes, and in all of them one presence seemed to weigh on me in all these mighty shapes - the presence of something unknown and pitiless. For continual suffering had annihilated religious faith within me: to the utterly miserable - the unloving and the unloved - there is no religion possible, no worship but a worship of devils. And beyond all these, and continually recurring, was the vision of my death - the pangs, the suffocation, the last struggle, when life would be grasped at in vain. ("The Lifted Veil")

Mary Ann Evans

There is a point when the anguished soul finally despairs.  A moment in life when the heart, the will, even the spirit crumbles.  Some say that after much grief and drowning in tears, it is possible to pick up the pieces and carefully repair what was shattered. I say nay.  For the chains of despair have no key, and the soul destroyed by that monster can never hope to be unaffected.  There are things done that cannot be undone.

A weird time in which we are alive. We can travel anywhere we want, even to other planets. And for what? To sit day after day, declining in morale and hope.

Philip K. Dick

Even my aunt Joan, hopelessly sentimental about every member of our family, admitted that I was hideous.

My life has become a dismal sigh fettered by pangs of grief and anguished weeping.

You’ve had many ordeals in the past. During these ordeals, life seemed unbearable. You may have collapsed from the exhaustion of hopelessness and curled into a fetal position. Regardless of how difficult this new ordeal may be, as with the others, this too will be overcome. It will make you stronger.
