Lie died on 30 December 1968 of a heart attack in Geilo Norway. From 1922 to 1935 he was a legal consultant for the Workers' National Trade Union (named Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions from 1957). Lie was later appointed Minister of Trade (July to October 1939) and Minister of Supplies (October 1939 to 1941).

From 1946 to 1952 he was the first Secretary-General of the United Nations. Trygve Halvdan Lie (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˌtɾyɡʋə ˈliː] ([Image] listen); 16 July 1896 – 30 December 1968) was a Norwegian politician labour leader government official and author.
