The lands granted were in the occupancy of savages and situated in a wilderness, of which the government had never taken possession, and of which it could not with its own citizens ever have taken possession.

Austin. Wharton moved to Texas and on December 5 1827 married Sarah Ann Groce the daughter of a wealthy landowner. Shortly thereafter he was appointed as one of three commissioners to the United States to secure aid for the Texians.
