In 1975 the family moved to Nashville Tennessee where Conte had been recruited by Hospital Corporation of America. Bredesen used some of the savings to establish a "safety net" for health clinics affected by the cuts. in 1967.

A member of the Democratic Party he was first elected Governor in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. Philip Norman "Phil" Bredesen Jr. Bredesen is the founder of the HealthAmerica Corporation which he sold in 1986.
