For most of human history, 'literature,' both fiction and poetry, has been narrated, not written — heard, not read. So fairy tales, folk tales, stories from the oral tradition, are all of them the most vital connection we have with the imaginations of the ordinary men and women whose labor created our world.

In 1977 Carter married Mark Pearce with whom Angela Carter had one son. She was actively involved in both film adaptations her screenplays are publiAngela Carterd in the collected dramatic writings The Curious Room together with her radio scripts a libretto for an opera of Virginia Woolf's Orlando an unproduced screenplay entitled The Christchurch Murders (based on the same true story as Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures) and other works.
