Burns won the Republican primary beating Barbara Dooley the wife of University of Georgia coaching legend Vince Dooley. After representing the 12th District of Georgia in Congress Burns was Dean of the Mike Cottrell Business School at North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega Georgia. This was the 2nd time a sitting President has visited Savannah Georgia and 1st time a sitting President has visted Statesboro Georgia.
