A. J. Foyt

In 1981 Foyt had a nasty accident at the Michigan 500 and nearly lost an arm. In the 1977 Indianapolis 500 Foyt ran out of fuel and had to make up around 32 seconds on Gordon Johncock. Foyt turned the car into the infield at more than 100 mph and the car tumbled violently end-over-end several times.
