Nalbandian's trademark shot is his double-handed backhand down-the-line which he often uses to set up a point by either hitting a clean winner or forcing a weak return from the opponent. At the Australian Open he defeated Marc Gicquel in the first round 6–1 4–6 6–2 6–3 before being upset by unseeded Taiwanese player Lu Yen-Hsun 4–6 7–5 6–4 4–6 2–6 in the second round.
