Mile tracks put more emphasis on the driver. On the longer tracks, you can drive flat out all the way around, so it's more of an engineering exercise. On a mile, you can't run flat out. You're constantly in traffic, there's more driver involvement.

He is best known for winning the 2004 Indianapolis 500 while driving for Rahal Letterman Racing and the 2009 24 Hours of Daytona for Brumos Racing. In November 2003 he dabbled with a one-off drive in a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Homestead circuit before being called by Bobby Rahal to drive the #15 Argent Mortgage Honda when Kenny Bräck was injured in a late-race crash at Texas Motor Speedway in 2003. However Rice was injured in a crash at Indianapolis during practice and was not cleared to race.
