The first American ancestor of our name was a younger son of these old Devonshire people, and came to the Virginia colony in the reign of Charles the First.

He was born in Rio de Janeiro Brazil to Henry Alexander Wise and Sarah Sergeant. John Sergeant Wise (December 27 1846 – May 12 1913) was an American author and leader in Virginia.
