It's such a beautiful sport, with no politics involved, no color, no class. Only as a youngster can you play and as a pro can you win. The game has kept me young, involved and excited and for me to be up here with gems of baseball.

Broadcasting career


St. After the network moved away from dedicated team announcers Buck continued to call regional NFL action through 1974 as well as several NFC Championship Games and Super Bowl IV. Military service

The physicality of Buck's work on the Great Lakes left in him good physical condition at the time he entered the Army.

Buck's play-by-play work earned him recognition from numerous Halls of Fame such as the National Baseball Hall of Fame Pro Football Hall of Fame and National Radio Hall of Fame. Some of Buck's famous play-by-play calls include Kirk's Gibson 1988 World Series Game 1 Home Run Ozzie Smith's 1985 NLCS home run and Kirby Puckett's walk-off home run in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series. After graduating high school Buck worked on large shipping boats that traveled the Great Lakes.
