With the formation of the State of Israel Lehi formally disbanded on May 29 1948 and its forces joined the Israeli army. They had two children Yair and Gilada. Finally Shamir gave in and in October 1991 participated in the Madrid talks.

Before the establishment of the State of Israel Shamir was a member of Lehi and one of its commanders after Avraham Stern was killed. Shamir was the country's third longest-serving prime minister after David Ben-Gurion and Benjamin Netanyahu.
