News released on the Third Man Records website on May 23 2012 stated that Beck would be releasing a new single entitled "I Just Started Hating Some People Today" / "Blue Randy" on the label in both digital and physical formats on May 28 2012 as well as in "an extremely limited run of 100 Tri Color 7-inches". Beck wrote the music co-wrote the lyrics and produced and mixed the album. He has also taken music from Los Angeles as a reference point in his songs.

Both Odelay and Sea Change appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The four-time platinum artist rose to underground popularity with his early works which combined social criticism with musical and lyrical experimentation. Beck's 1996 album Odelay was awarded Album of the Year by the American magazine Rolling Stone and by UK publications NME and Mojo.
