Unlike some other stars of disco who faded as the music became less popular in the 1980s and beyond Summer was able to grow beyond the genre and later segued to a pop-rock sound.

Joining a touring version of the musical Hair Donna Summer spent several years living in West Germany where Donna Summer married Helmut Sommer whose surname Donna Summer adopted as her stage name.
