Following a general election defeat in 1900 Campbell-Bannerman went on to lead the Liberal Party to a landslide victory over the Conservative Party at the 1906 general election also the last election in which the Liberals gained an overall majority in the House of Commons. Campbell-Bannerman resigned as Prime Minister on 3 April 1908 due to ill health and was replaced by his Chancellor Herbert Asquith. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman GCB (7 September 1836 – 22 April 1908) was a British Liberal Party politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1905 to 1908 and Leader of the Liberal Party from 1899 to 1908.
